The central theme of the conference is this shared marginality. Marginality is understood not with an adverse connotation but, on the contrary, as an opportunity and an aptitude to delve into local issues, to hybridise—for different reasons in the two countries—their identity with multiple cultural references, not to align uncritically with dominant internationalist cultures and, in some cases, to make the 'margin' a reason for success even on an international scale.
The aim of the conference is therefore to begin a reconstruction of the framework of exchanges that have linked Portuguese and Italian architectural culture throughout the 20th century and up to the present day, with a non-exclusive focus on the following areas:
- architecture and politics
- modernism, modernity
- anonymous architecture
- architecture and travel
- architecture and photography
- architecture of the city
- schools, masters, genealogies
- project practices
- publishing and international exhibitions - Art and Architecture Biennales
- intersections between architecture, design and art
Scientific reflection will start from these clear parameters and presuppose an active contribution from the different areas of knowledge involved in the topics, i.e., architecture, town planning, design, history and history of art, as well as other fields such as sociology or anthropology and territorial sciences, depending, of course, on the paper proposals received.
The scope is intended to be broad but focused, enabling a wide range of thematic and monographic approaches.
